Government of Canada supports Rainy River First Nations
EMO, November 25, 2004 -- Member of Parliament (Thunder Bay-Rainy River) Ken Boshcoff, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $69,000 in funding for the Rainy River First Nations. The funds will help the organization to plan the development of the Kay-Nah-chi-Wah-Nung Historical Centre.
"This historical centre plays an essential role in increasing awareness of Aboriginal heritage," said Mr. Boshcoff. "It doing so, it strengthens the dialogue between the region's Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal residents."
"Our government is committed to helping cultural organizations improve the ways in which they plan, organize, finance and govern themselves," added Minister Frulla. "This funding will enable the Kay-Nah-chi-Wah-Nung Historical Centre to carry on with its development while continuing to preserve and promote Aboriginal culture, for the Ojibwe people and all Canadians."
The funding will enable the Rainy River First Nations to develop a business plan that will guide the activities of the Kay-Nah-chi-Wah-Nung Historical Centre in the coming decade. The plan will include an operational and marketing strategy. The Historical Centre has been open to the public since 1998.
Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Capacity Building component of its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program. This program supports modern management and greater financial stability in arts and heritage organizations. It is part of the Tomorrow Starts Today initiative, which has been renewed for a fourth year with $207 million in funding.
Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal Budget.
